The first English Schools National Track and Field Championships took place in 1925 and in the following year Somerset Schools’ Athletic Association was formed. Success was seen in the following year with a win in the boys 100 yards.
In later years the championships were expanded by the introduction of under 16 year olds and finally to a format almost identical to today’s event with three age groups contested by two county groupings.
Obviously records for the period from 1925 to 1968 are a little patchy but in the list of Somerset national champions are names who went on to fame at Olympic games and other sports!
